Origin of Sin

Have you ever asked yourself where does sin come from? If you haven't, you should. The answer impacts every aspect of your life, especially the end of it. To some the question may even seem elementary, but how can sin exist if God who cannot sin (James 1:13), created a perfect world free of sin? The obvious answer most people think of is the story of Adam and Eve but the origin of sin goes back farther than that. Is it the Devil? No... although he was the first to sin. So where did sin come from?

The answer is something we exercise everyday– our free will. The Devil got things started when he chose to rebel against God and he was thrown out of heaven (Luke 10:18). Afterwards is when the Adam and Eve story came into play. They introduced sin into the world because God gave them the free will to eat from the tree of knowledge. God could've easily removed it from the Garden of Eden but he purposely put it there. Why? Because God is love and love never forces someone to do something.

Free will is dangerous when we attempt to fulfill our desires (James 4:2,3). People steal because they want something they don't have. People have sex outside of marriage because of their lust for someone. People retaliate when wronged because of our desire for revenge. Our desires entice us to sin but make no mistake about it, it's our free will that enables us to act on it.

The troubles that we face come from the choices we make or someone else makes. You have the power to control you. When others cause you strife or harm, you control how you respond. We often make bad choices trying to obtain the necessities. God promised he will provide all of your needs (Phil 4:19) but you have to choose to believe it and allow him to take control. Now how does free will impact you once your life comes to an end? You choose, yes choose to go to hell if you separate yourself from God by choosing not to follow his will.

Think about it.
