Follow The Leader

If you were blind folded and someone had to guide you around all day, who would you choose? Obviously, you would pick someone you trust like your spouse, your mom or a close friend. We would certainly choose almost anyone over ourselves. Yet we go through life relying on ourselves to lead the way instead of grabbing the hand of the ultimate guide.

Trust. That’s what it’s all about. We trust ourselves to solve our problems. When something comes up we listen to the advice of family and friends but in the end we do what we think is right. The problem with having problems is that it’s hard to see things clearly. We often make decisions without all the facts or when we are too emotional. If you’ve heard the expression ‘hindsight is 20/20,’ you know it’s not used when we make the right choices. So how do we make better choices?

We have to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take” (‭‭Prov 3:5-6‬ ‭NLT‬‬). The verses are one of what I like to call ‘toss out verses’ we often use. They sound so wonderful that we love to toss them out there for inspiration but we don’t study it. We don’t really internalize it. When you break the verses down that word ‘trust’ pops up again. We are to trust in God not sometimes nor halfway but we must trust him completely and always.

The next thing God tells us is not to “depend on our own understanding.” We can’t rely on ourselves because we can’t see all the possible outcomes. We make too many mistakes and far too often we’re guided by our flesh and not our spirit. God then instructs us to “seek his will in all you do.” This is the trickiest part of the verse. How do you know what is God’s will?  You have to read the Bible. Led by the Holy Spirit, the apostles wrote down God’s will. Just like the apostles you also must have the Holy Spirit to understand God’s will which you receive by becoming a Christian.

The last part of the verse which should have us all jumping and shouting for joy is “he will show you which path to take.” After you put your trust in God rather than yourself, after you seek his will, God will guide you. So step out on faith, reach out your hand, and follow the Leader.

Think about it.
